Trade unions are the very essence of social actionUnions represent workers in a wide range of industrial sectors and campaign to improve their pay and conditions at work. Collectivism and solidarity are at the heart of trade unionism and trade union activity – this is a great strength of the movement. In a trade union, workers are not alone and by working together much can be achieved.

However, trade unions face significance barriers, not least the draconian anti trade union legislation that is place. This piece looks at what helps and hinders workers and their unions.
