Let the People Sing

Four-part documentary.

Storytelling by Cameron Nicoll and Nicky Barnes in collaboration with Let the People Sing.

This documentary comes in four parts. You can engage with the YouTube playlist of all four parts or with the individual parts linked below.

In the Craigmillar and Niddrie area of Edinburgh, a group of local people in recovery from addiction came together to make recovery visible and accessible in the community. They established Let the People Sing to improve the lives of those who have become problematic substance users, their families and friends.

A not-for-profit community-based organisation since 2022, the group opened ‘The Bothy for Recovery’ in Dec 2022. The ‘Bothy’ is a physical space where people can drop in and make use of the facilities. It is overseen by the community and provides a welcoming space and a programme of activities to promote connection, practical assistance, and healing

Public education, policy advocacy, and peer-based recovery support is how they implement the groups mission to ensure recovery from substance use addictions is visible and available to all including families and loved ones.

By mobilising resources within and outside of the recovery community they have already increased recovery assets and services to the area, whilst an upswell of individuals recovering from alcohol and other drug addictions in the area means improved health, less premature deaths, and happier families in the future.
